MESSAGE FROM DAVID HILL -CHAIR OF SUFFOLK LOC
COVID-19 Suffolk LOC Update April 13th
I hope you and your families are keeping well. Thank you for replying to our many requests for information. Essential care has been clarified over the last week, now to urgent care. As we do not have a MECS we have signed a memorandum of understanding with the national primary eye care company to provide the admin and governance for an urgent care service during the COVID-19 crisis. The scheme is likely to look like a MECS but with a greater emphasis on virtual appointments (see below) and urgent conditions.
I know many of you are providing urgent care, often at no charge to patients which is admirable but unlikely to be sustainable in these challenging times. I have attached a survey from the primary care company in which you can express an interest in a funded urgent care service. If the proposal is accepted NHS England will approach our two CCG’s on our behalf with more clout and hopefully get things moving quickly. The CCG does not have to commission the service but with the great work you have been doing and the support of our hospital colleagues, we are confident.
Talking of safe delivery. The LOC has received a small supply of PPE from NHS England for distribution to practices delivering care face to face. We have gloves, masks, goggles and access to locally made face visors. Our aim is to source aprons, but this is proving a little more challenging. As our health secretary asks, please do not take more than you need, and use as specified (see the 2 links below). I am assured more supplies will follow. Geoff Peacock is the point of contact for the PPE. Please email him for further information (email@example.com). Secondly, I have copied some information on virtual consultations from the national primary eye care company. The Fleming app works well and all you need is an NHS email account to use.
Also, you will find attached a form that can be used request for an NHS prescription if the patient is entitled to free medicines. This is only for prescribing within your education level e.g. normal formulary if not an independent prescriber.
Please keep safe and let us know if you have any questions. The expression of interest is needed by the 19th of April (email with link to follow). Any general questions for the LOC please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
What PPE to use (correct today-please keep up to date with requirements)

Suffolk optometrists were represented at the Suffolk and Essex NHS foundation trust annual falls study day by Dr Derek Dunstone. Dr Dunstone attended the meeting and presented the case for better eye care in the prevention of falls for the elderly and frail. The slides from the presentation are available to view HERE
We mentioned in the summer newsletter our plans to hold a pre-reg event later this year. We intend to make it an informal evening of learning including a good dinner. The event will be hosted by the LOC newly qualified representative, Sareena, and an experienced LOC member.
The aims are to:
· Introduce the pre-regs to the work of the LOC
· Enhance understanding of local referral pathways
· Share learnings with peers
If you have a pre-reg joining your practice this summer, please email Sareena at email@example.com to let her know your location. Once we have an idea of numbers and locations we find suitable venues and send you an invitation.
West Suffolk Hospital have informed the LOC that all fax machines in the departments have now been switched off. All urgent referrals will need to be sent via secure NHS mail to wsh-tr.EYEsecs@nhs.net and rapid access wet AMD referrals to wsh-tr.RapidAMD@nsh.net
Please note this does not affect referrals to Ipswich Hospital who are still accepting faxes.
To apply for an NHS.net account please visit the protected area of the website where you will find forms and information. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you require the password to enter the protected area.
The new improved Suffolk LOC website is now live. We hope to provide you with a go to website for eyecare information.
We have been informed by WSH of longer than usual waiting times for cataract surgery. Please see information attached.Read More
